Merry

What it's like being me !

Hello, My name is Merry. I am 11 years old and I have a condition called A-T. Merry

I have become more tired the older I become. I find it difficult to stand up alone and fall over easily with a big thump! I find it difficult talking to people I don’t really know as they don’t know me well enough to listen to me carefully and I worry they don’t understand me. I become frustrated when I have to repeat myself over and over again.

I have recently received a communication aid called a ‘liberator 14’ and I am presently learning how to use it to make talking to other people easier.

I feel my body benefits a lot by doing my stretches daily. They make my body feel ready to work.

I now find books harder to read with small print as my eyesight isn't as good as it used to be. I have a Kindle which allows me to adjust the font size, which is helpful when I’m feeling really tired. I love reading and I love my Kindle and use it a lot.

I take a long time to eat meals because I have to separate foods with different textures. My drinks now have to be thickened and my cup of tea does not taste nice.

I have recently received an electric wheelchair and I am great at driving it already. I now have more freedom to do and go where I want which is great! I can go out at playtime and toot and chase the other children.

Having A-T is not really a nice thing but despite it I keep on smiling and I am a happy, friendly & medium sized girl.
