DALE
My name is Dale Phillips and I live in Stalybridge, Cheshire. I am 47 years of age and I was diagnosed with A-T when I was 12. The following is a brief summary of some of the events I have taken part in over the past 20 years. I have always been a very active person despite being in a wheelchair and for years have taken part in many fundraising activities.
Amongst my fundraising efforts are two tandem parachute jumps which I did from Grange-over-Sands near Morcambe at a height of 10,000ft. I raised just over £3,000 from the two jumps for the A-T Research fund. I have also performed a number of abseils, again to raise funds for the Society. Recently, I did a wheelchair accessible walk along the Longendale Trail, and the following day I did an abseil down a 50ft tower at Glossop Fire Station.
I also spent 2 years at Portland Training College in Mansfield, Nottingham - a further education college for people with disabilities, obtaining a couple of certificates for academic achievements. The college is a residential place, I only came home at holiday times and the odd weekend. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay there as it gave me a great deal of independence.
I have had numerous holidays in many countries such as Italy, Austria, Germany and Spain to name a few. Today I usually spend much of my time writing to lots of different companies to try and get disabled facilities to make life better for wheelchair users. I also enjoy writing to pen-friends in this country and around the world.
So to all those with A-T - you can make the best of your life like I do.
Good luck in whatever you do.
